Oakland has been providing boundary management services (hedges, fencing, site tidy etc) since 2006 to both domestic and commercial customers.  

Hedges near to a property typically create privacy and security.  They always need good management to keep tidy, unintrusive and looking sharp.

​Solihull MBC's motto is 'Urbs in Rure'.  The urban area is truly 'green and rural' and a major factor is the degree of hedging around properties.

Hedging requires maintenance typically twice a year.  Early springtime is the major time to stall growth and the autumn and winter periods are the time to cut back what has emerged during summer.  This stops the hedges encroaching and taking up more and more of your precious garden! 

Oakland takes care to manage hedge maintenance around the nesting seasons and will always advise if asked. (Birds and bats  don't typically nest in leylandii hedging!)

Where conifers are used for hedging, missing a maintenance activity allows the hedge to grow further into both yours and your neighbours property!  Consequently you lose more and more of your garden to the hedge! 

We never cut conifer hedging right back (unless explicitly requested) as new growth won't re-appear the following spring time and the hedges never recover.  

If left unattended for a couple of years it's almost impossible to regain the 'space' they have occupied as cutting back 'too much' leaves no room for future growth.  The investment, privacy and security are all at risk as a new hedge needs to be planted. ​

On the other hand, native hedges (hawthorn, blackthorn etc) can recover from a severe cut back and similarly, laurel hedges can withstand some harsh treatment.  Laurel hedges can quickly get out of hand and become particularly invasive so do keep your eye on those.

So, while the hedges grow almost imperceptibly over the years, it really does make sense to have them regularly managed and trimmed back before they get out out of hand.
